About Mikey

I was born in Lima, Peru on May 10th, 1991. At the age of 3, my dad started teaching me how to play tennis. I won my first tournament at the age of 6 in the boy's 10 division in Miami.

I have been a Miami resident since December 1996. From then on my father did not stop training me. From ages 6 to 10 I played in the Greater Miami Tennis Foundation. I played in the Florida team and traveled all over the nation competing against other states. We won the team championship 3 years in a row, beating Georgia in all 3 finals. As a reorganization of our success we received a plaque given to us by Joe Carollo, mayor of Miami, and by Thomas Regalado, Commissioner.

After this, I started training for more high level competition tournaments. In the Boy's 12 division in Florida I was top 5 in the state. Later on, in the Boy's 14 I got to be number 3 in Florida. A few months before I turned 15, I played my first 5 tournaments in the Boy's 16 and fortunately won them all. So my father and I decided to go straight into Boy's 18 division in USTA and ITF. In the ITF Circuit I started off with a ranking of 2800 and in about 4 months of playing ITF tournaments I jumped to a world junior ranking of 627. But unfortunately we stopped traveling due to financial problems, the trips just got to expensive for us. That caused me to miss a year of tournaments and caused my ranking to go down to the 900's, which we thought my ranking was going to drop way more. We have played ITF tournaments in Texas, Illinois, Louisiana, South Carolina, Florida, Curacao, Ecuador and Peru. I also have participated in the Prince Cup, Eddie Herr and Orange bowl; all held in Florida.

In the USTA Boy's 18 Florida tournaments I have won numerous local and super series tournaments; and recently I have had my best results in the Boy's 18 division in Florida State Designated's. In the Tallahassee Designated I came in 3rd place, being down 6-3, 5-3 (40-15), my opponent had 2 match points. I came back and won the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Also I played the Miami Designated and got to the finals, unfortunately at 2-1 in the 1st set I twisted my ankle really bad and could hardly walk but I did not want to retire, I always think there is a chance and anything can happen, if I'm going down I'm going down with a fight, so I literally played the whole match on one leg, limping. I had no other choice than to try to hit winners on every shot since I couldn't run or walk. Surprisingly, it almost worked and I lost the match 6-4, 6-3.
